If you are into horror and you like the post apocalyptic stories, The Stand from Stephen King is a great novel from 1978. This story shows the breakdown of society and of the entire world when a virus, made on purpose to be used as a biological weapon is accidentally released. Escaping from a secret American underground laboratory, it is named ‘The Blue Project’.
When an accident happens at the US Army base a virus is released Charles Champion and his family manage to escape. Charles is named Patient Zero and by the time the army locates him he is already killed by this virus and it has spread to many other people around. Project Blue is a very dangerous virus resistant to all vaccines and humans antibodies. It is very contagious thus triggers a pandemic.
The proportion of this pandemic is apocalyptic and the story follows a few survivors divided in two groups, one led by Mother Abigail and the other by an evil being with supernatural powers named Randal Flagg. They start a fight of survival and power. Mother Abigail uses only her wisdom to help people but Flagg uses black magic, he is a powerful wizard.
Will humanity survive? Will Flagg take control of the remaining society with his magical power?
This book was dedicated to Stephen King’s wife Tabitha. ‘For Tabby: This Dark Chest Of Wonders.’
This Stephen King’s novel, The Stand was nominated in 1979 for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel.
So, now it is up to you to decide if you like it or not, but me, I strongly recommend it.
